History

KRGV signed on in 1954 as a primary NBC affiliate, sharing ABC programming with KGBT-TV (channel 4). The current owners, the Manship family, acquired the station in 1964. It became a sole ABC affiliate in 1976; NBC didn't return to the Rio Grande Valley full-time until KVEO-TV (channel 23) signed on in 1981. In 1995, KRGV added a secondary affiliation with UPN (it had carried the first season of the network's Star Trek: Voyager on a standalone basis before signing as a formal secondary affiliate that June); the following year, UPN programming moved to KVEO, also on a secondary basis.

KRGV was the first station in the Rio Grande Valley to transmit an HD signal on VHF channel 13. On September 9, 2009, NewsChannel 5 began broadcasting in HD. Also with the switch was a new branding, Channel 5 News.

KRGV has the highest rated television news organizations in the area winning numerous regional and statewide Emmys. Most recently, the station has been the highest-rated station in the Rio Grande Valley for most of the time since the 1950s.

Programming

Syndicated programming

Outside of the ABC network schedule, syndicated programming on KRGV-TV includes The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Live with Kelly and Ryan, Inside Edition, Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, and Access.

Preemptions and delays

For many years, KRGV aired syndicated programming leading back into ABC's late night block and tape delayed the latter to accommodate whatever syndicated programming aired at that time. Married... with Children consistently aired at 10:30 following the newscast since it first began airing in syndication, while the rest of the late night schedule shifted around through the years. This caused the ABC program Nightline to air as late as an hour and a half after its network slot and Jimmy Kimmel Live! as many as two hours after its network slot in some years. By the 2010s, both Nightline and Jimmy Kimmel Live! air back to back as they do across many affiliates, but were tape-delayed 30 minutes in favor of an extension of the 10 p.m. news known as Channel 5 News at 10:30. Because of the delay, both Nightline and Kimmel were broadcast in standard definition. KRGV did not yet have the capability to record the two programs in HD for later rebroadcast. This all changed in 2009, when KRGV began recording network and syndicated programming in HD, enabling both Nightline and Kimmel to be seen in HD.

In January 2018, KRGV's contract with Tribune Broadcasting to carry This TV on their second subchannel ended, and the station decided to move the 10:30 p.m. newscast to 5.2 as part of its newly launched locally-programmed independent station carrying a mix of Spanish and English content known as "Somos El Valle" (English: "We Are the Valley"). At that point, Kimmel and Nightline assumed their traditional 10:35 p.m. and 11:37 p.m. slots as programmed by the network.

News operation

On August 24, 2009, KRGV extended its 10 p.m. newscast by 30 minutes, ending at 11 p.m. This made the station one of the few in the nation to have a 10:30 p.m. newscast. KRGV was one of six ABC affiliates to have hour-long 10 p.m. newscasts, along with KOAT-TV in Albuquerque, New Mexico, KITV in Honolulu, Hawaii, WISN in Milwaukee, WEAR in Pensacola, Florida and KSTP in Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Minnesota (KSTP no longer does so as of 2017).

On September 9, 2009, KRGV began broadcasting in high definition. Along with the switch was a new HD set, graphics from Giant Octopus, and name change. NewsChannel 5 is now known as Channel 5 News. KRGV had been running promotions on the change to HD. KRGV also changed its logo now showing just "5" on a blue background instead of the NewsChannel 5 logo it previously had. In September 2010, KRGV became a fully powered high definition television station. KRGV started shooting and editing in brand new state of the art HD Cameras and HD editing suites making KRGV the premiere High Definition News Leader.

In September 2010, KRGV began expanded Channel 5 News This Morning by a half hour, pushing the start time back another 30 minutes to 4:30 a.m. The newscast is broadcast live in the newsroom.

On April 2, 2011, KRGV expanded their morning newscast now being available on Saturday Mornings at 8 a.m. and Sunday Mornings at 9 a.m. On April 1, 2011, it was revealed to viewers of the new additions. Also revealed was a new set and a new weather center that was rumored to be under construction during the month of March. A new 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. newscast began airing September 12, 2011.

On October 24, 2012, KRGV redesigned its website and logo, eliminating the "KRGV" ribbon underneath the logo and integrating the ABC logo in its full form.

In January 2018, KRGV added a two-hour extension of its morning news to its new Independent station, known as Somos El Valle, seen on KRGV Channel 5.2. A new Spanish-language newscast was added at 9:00 p.m., seven nights a week and the 10:30 p.m. news on weeknights was moved to 5.2 as well. All current newscasts on 5.1 are also simulcast on 5.2, meaning that it airs KRGV's morning news in its entirety from 4:30-9:00 a.m. and airs a two-hour block of local news on weeknights and Sundays from 9:00-11:00 p.m. (9:00-10:30 p.m. on Saturdays)
